Chester Zoo uses IP video to maximise security and operational efficiency
Chester Zoo attracts more than 1.9 million visitors each year, making it the most popular UK visitor attraction outside London. With further growth planned, the Zoo undertook a site-wide vulnerability assessment with a view to modernising and strengthening its security provision.
The assessment recommended the implementation of a new, centralised CCTV system to enhance the effectiveness of the in-house security team, tighten perimeter security and improve visitor and staff health & safety monitoring.
In addition to security and safety improvements, provision of distributed video and analytics would also support other operational requirements from animal welfare monitoring and behavioural research to retail management and public relations.
The Zoo selected specialist systems integrator NW Security Group for this project, which initially ran for two years and now continues with the ongoing development and maintenance of the system as the Zoo continues to expand. To date, the new video surveillance system transmits footage from over 300 Axis IP cameras to a central control room where Milestone’s XProtect video management software allows staff to monitor live views and easily search and quickly retrieve footage from recordings.
