Chester Zoo has captured the birth of a rare Eastern black rhino with the IP CCTV cameras installed inside its enclosure. The zoo is making wide use of cameras in animal welfare applications and this is a great example of IP video being used outside the scope of security.
The outdoor-ready Axis P3225-LVE with HD 1080p resolution was installed specifically to monitor the pregnancy as well as capture the birth. For 24-hour monitoring it was imperative that the camera featured true day/night capability with infrared illumination.
With the use of an IP camera, Chester Zoo curators could remotely monitor the pregnancy from their mobile devices and record events without disturbing the mammal.
Capturing the birth of this critically endangered calf has given the zoo, and animal lovers, a rare glimpse of this ‘momentous event’. A birth that will also help to boost the breeding program trying to save this magnificent species from the brink of extinction.
