NW Systems Group has completed installation of a comprehensive video surveillance and Health & Safety monitoring system for BAM Nuttall Highway Services‘ new depot and offices in Winsford, Cheshire.
NW Systems integrated Milestone XProtect Express video management software (VMS) with Paxton Net2 access control software to provide 100% surveillance coverage site-wide. To help meet BAM Nuttall‘s Health & Safety monitoring requirements, it enabled managers to view site activity via their smart phones or tablets, around the clock. View the video case study of this installation, which integrates Milestone with Axis, Sony and Mobotix IP cameras and Paxton access control.
NW Systems installed a total of seven multi-megapixel network cameras throughout BAM Nuttall‘s 40,000 square foot road maintenance depot and road sign factory. A total of five network cameras (including one relocated from another depot), from three different manufacturers, were installed externally to provide 100% coverage of the car parks, rear yard and side entrance to the yard. NW Systems installed a further two cameras, fitted with wide angle lenses inside, to cover the sign shop and warehouse. All cameras were linked back to Milestone XProtect Express VMS.
BAM Nuttall uses the internal cameras to monitor the production of road signs to ensure that Health & Safety procedures are followed. The Unit has also deployed cameras on one of its impact protection vehicles to record teams putting out road signs to direct vehicles around upcoming road works.
Steve Gee, highway engineering manager, Bam Nuttall Highway Services, explained:
“Recently one of our mobile cameras (fitted facing backwards on the wagons which we use to transport and install traffic management equipment) captured an incident where a car drove into the back of one of our impact protection vehicles. As the driver backed away from our vehicle one of our employees stood in between our vehicle and the driver‘s car – thus placing himself in a potentially dangerous position should a second car hit the back of the stationery one.”
“Our managers now play this footage as part of a staff training exercise to reinforce correct procedure in case of emergencies like this. It is our job as a responsible employer to highlight good practise and also point out where our employees have unintentionally exposed themselves to hazards. We use visual aids like this to improve training and thus minimise accidents at work. We have found that these camera recordings are a great tool for affecting behavioural change. The NW Systems-installed cameras at our new Winsford facility have already proved their worth in this capacity.”
Frank Crouwel, managing director, NW Systems, added:
“We‘ve designed and developed a fully integrated and mobile video and access control security system for BAM Nuttall Highway Services so that managers can view images covering the whole site and link door entry events with video to provide comprehensive 24-hour security of the offices.
“The video also enables managers to keep an eye on the depot and road sign manufacturing operations to ensure Health & Safety procedures are being followed. At night it enables security operatives to gain visibility of the internal areas from any mobile device – something that is very useful if intrusion detectors trigger alarms in the middle of the night. This inexpensive system provides multiple benefits for BAM Nuttall which stretches way beyond traditional security, delivering a number of operational benefits.”
