IP video offers much more than just security surveillance
The shift to IP-based video systems creates new opportunities going beyond CCTV's traditional purpose of security surveillance.
Whilst its prime use remains security, a host of other areas of operation is now benefitting from network video. In many cases we see IP video cameras being used in a multi-purpose fashion, often for operations management during the day and security surveillance at night.
Retail
IP video is widely used in retail for detecting check-out shrinkage, monitoring store presentation and analysing customer behaviour.
Manufacturing
Within manufacturing, network video is used to monitor production lines, manage quality control processes and detect intrusion of hazardous zones.
Education
In addition to detecting night-time vandalism, IP video is used in schools and colleges to manage student behaviour and tackle bullying. Teacher training and monitoring computer rooms are other common uses.
Transport
Transport terminals benefit from network video by monitoring and controlling vehicle movement and record vehicles at in and out gates.
Healthcare
Monitoring patient care, protecting expensive equipment and sensitive areas such as operating theatres and drug storage, as well as student training and remote export advice are all example use cases of how IP video is deployed in hospitals and medical centres.
Construction
Whilst IP cameras are used for remote security monitoring, on many sites cameras are being used for progress monitoring, creating high-quality time lapse movies and online project promotion.

With an estimated 4m security cameras, the UK has the world's most mature video security market, whereas the use of CCTV in places such as Western Europe and the Nordics is a relatively new phenomenon.
Consequently, the market penetration of IP cameras in the various regions show very different figures.
Estimates are that in the UK the number of IP cameras as a percentage of the total camera installation base is still less than 15% and between 20% to 25% in the US, whilst ratios of over 50% are quoted for the Northern and Western parts of Europe.
These figures speak for themselves, IP video still has a long way to go.
